Picture this: a young, ambitious woman full of hopes and dreams, ready to conquer the world. That was me, eager to find my place in the professional realm. Little did I know that my journey would be far from straightforward, but boy was it worth it!
Experimenting with Different Paths
Let's dive into my story — one that unfolded through a series of daring experiments after a rapidly successful career:
Experiment #1: Exploring Recruiting
As fate would have it, I found myself delving into the world of recruiting after an impressive run at Edelman. While I had a knack for building teams within the organization, I soon realized that external recruiting wasn't my true calling.
Experiment #2: Embracing Academia
Seeking a new direction, I embraced the opportunity to become a marketing professor. Immersed in the world of academia, I loved imparting knowledge. However, the business side of me yearned for more, and I knew there was another experiment to undertake.
Experiment #3: Venturing into Social Selling and Consulting
With curiosity as my compass, I ventured into the realm of social selling as a stylist with Stella & Dot. Despite battling nerves and worries about what others might think, I bravely embraced this new challenge. Concurrently, I continued my digital consulting work, keeping the fire of experimentation burning.
Experiment #4: Discovering Leadership Development
A serendipitous encounter at a speaking event introduced me to the world of leadership development. Bill G. Williams, now my mentor, recognized my engaging nature and nudged me toward this exciting path. It was like discovering a hidden treasure that perfectly aligned with my experiences as a professor and speaker.
Experiment #5: The Coaching Journey
In 2017, I embarked on my coach training journey, and that's when the lightbulb moment struck! Coaching resonated deeply with me, but I had no clue how to turn it into a thriving career. Along the way, I attended an agile coaching conference, driven by the promise of financial success. But my heart wasn't fully invested.
Experiment #6: Uncovering a Passion for Leadership Coaching
Then, someone noticed my speaking prowess and suggested that I become a leadership coach. It was a revelation! With my diverse experiences and an arsenal of tools gained from my previous experiments, I felt a natural affinity for leadership coaching. Little did I know that this would lay the foundation for my future company, focusing on empowering women and people of color.
Fast forward a decade, and the curvy road of my career had finally straightened out. While it may not be perfectly linear, there's always something new to learn and exciting experiences to bring into your professional journey. Experiments were the key to helping me discover my hidden talents and getting me closer to the fulfilling career I now have today.
